SPOKANE PRIDE 28: TO THRIVE NOT JUST SURVIVE!
Since 1992, Spokane has seen the LGBTQA community come together to honor those brave individuals that fought back against the police raids in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York. The Stonewall Riots were a turning point for the gay rights movement. The following year, in 1970 the cities of Chicago, Los Angeles and New York all held parades commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Since then, cities around the globe have started marches and parades as well.
The first march in Spokane was literally on the sidewalks and was sponsored and coordinated by Spokane PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). The following year a permit was ordered and the march was in the streets, followed by a small rally in the park. This June marks the 28th year we’ve celebrated Pride in Spokane! Join us for a day to celebrate who we are, honor our past, and look forward to our future. Please come and enjoy the day of festivities and Pride with us. Everyone is welcome! This is a OUR family reunion celebrating all of our differences! We welcome our friends and families that are straight allies! Many of our siblings of all ages are coming out as Trans, Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Queer, Pansexual. Polysexual, Autosexual and more! These words help describe our orientation and there are finally words to describe our different genders as well, like: Non-binary (they/them), Binary (he/him or she/her), Gender-Fluid, Agender, Two-Spirit, Androgyne, and more. People are no longer confining themselves to the classification of the bodies they were born with or society’s rules for what those bodies can and cannot do. We may use separate labels to describe ourselves, but we are all one group, one family, pushing forward as a Proud Family!
The Pride Parade starts downtown at Noon so be sure to arrive early. Our Rainbow Festival opens immediately following the Pride Parade. The Rainbow Festival will be at Riverfront Park Lilac Meadows (east of the Clock Tower). Live Entertainment, Resource and Business Fair, Family Area, Odyssey Teen Zone, and the nYne Pride Bar featuring Beer, Wine, & Spirits await you. Bring your entire family for a day of fun.
Back by popular demand our celebration will be going into the night with an All Ages Dance Party. The nYne Pride Bar will stay open late and at approximately 10pm, there will be a fireworks display.
