With the addition of Florida, more than 70 percent of Americans now live in the 36 states and the District of Columbia where same-sex marriages are allowed.

To put that in perspective, only 9 states and D.C. allowed same-sex marriage in 2013. This is a monumental week for marriage equality. On Friday, the United States Supreme Court will meet in private to determine whether to consider cases related to marriage equality at the national level. Meanwhile, a federal court of appeals will hear cases concerning bans in Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
