Member Spotlight: House of POp

DSC_8659People naturally look inside the House of POp as they walk by. Bright lights shining through large glass windows inevitably catch every pedestrian’s attention. Vintage wood floors and original weathered brick walls, the hallmark of Spokane’s industrial past, contrast with full-length mirrors and stark white walls to highlight Douglas McCoy’s own photography, all of it done in-house.

Douglas McCoy is in the business of crafting identity. Inspired by pop-punk culture combining Seattle grunge and NYC haute couture, House of POp started as the brand identity for Douglas’ photo and film work appearing internationally in top fashion magazines. Now recognized from Miami to L.A. with international presence from Paris to Tokyo, House of POp has gained a cult following on social media. Constantly drawing inspiration from his work, Douglas tries to share the unique and creative ideas coming out of his shop with fashion-minded followers across the globe.

Identity can only be created up close and personal, of course, and the House of POp staff are great about getting to know each client before going crafting a unique hair style. Douglas takes the same attitude toward House of POp’s place in Spokane. He worked in Spokane for 12 years before opening his salon in September 2014, deciding that a shop with distinctive style and voice was exactly what Spokane needed right now. “Residents are ready for this city to come alive and have its own identity. We’re not Seattle, we’re not Portland, and Spokane recognizes that and embraces it. But to really shine through, the people have to demand it.” So he did. By opening a salon that really encourages confidence and creative expression he hopes to have the same effect on this city.

Spokane is lucky to have such a forward-thinking entrepreneur serving its citizens.11157273_976844055673887_572601388_o Douglas felt that joining INBA was a natural business move because his shop is based on equality. “There are no VIPs because once you’re inside, everyone is treated like a VIP, and everyone is welcome.” About half of his staff identify as LGBT and recommended that House of POp join INBA. He insists on keeping House of POp’s identity as cool as possible by highlighting the individual and rejects traditional advertising because it misses that mark completely. According to Douglas, “House of POp brings in people from all backgrounds and we do more than accept that, we embrace it and welcome them.”
