September Networking Lunch Recap - KSPS Community Advisory Board

KSPS Public Television is the region’s local PBS affiliate serving more than 2,000,000 households in eastern Washington, northern Idaho, Alberta, southeastern British Columbia, and beyond. Being one of the handful of PBS stations that broadcasts into Canada, 49% of KSPS members are Canadian.

The television station’s PBS license was held by District 81 until the district transferred the license to the Friends of KSPS in July of 2012 shortly after the new Executive Director, Gary Stokes was hired. A PBS requirement of the license transfer was for the station to form a new Community Advisory Board.

The new Community Advisory Board (CAB) serves as a vehicle to provide the public the opportunity to be heard on station programming, community service and impact on the community of major policy decisions. The CAB felt the best way to do this was establishing a KSPS Community Listening Tour to gather input. Presenting were board members Shaun Higgins, who hosts the KSPS Saturday Night Cinema, Marvo Reguindin who recently termed off of the KSPS Governing Board and station Executive Director, Gary Stokes.

INBA was selected as the first group to present to and the presenters received a positive response. Board chair Shaun Higgins reflected afterwards “Unfortunately we ran out of time to allow the audience to give us feedback during Q&A, but I was pleased to see many stay afterwards to ask questions and give feedback”

Needless to say, the presenters asked the audience to forward programming suggestions or feedback, questions on pledging to KSPS as well as interest in serving on the Governing or Community Advisory Board to Gary Stokes at .

KSPS is found on Channel 7 airs the signature programs of PBS, such as Antiques Roadshow, Masterpiece, Nova, Nature, Frontline and trusted children’s programs including Sesame Street and Curious George. KSPS also produces award-winning regional programs and documentaries, including Northwest Profiles, Health Matters, and FitKids. KSPS Create airs the best cooking, arts and crafts, gardening, home improvement, and travel programs from PBS and KSPS World features eye-opening documentaries and public affairs programs.
