Spokane Hosts LGBT Films this May

With the Spokane LGBT Film Festival no longer operational, INBA is dedicated to bringing you updates on LGBT focused films and other arts in the region.

FilmFest_banner_2015The Spokane Falls LGBT+ Alliance has sponsored another excellent film for this year’s SFCC  International Film Festival. Showing on May 19th at the Garland Theater:

Film 5Before Night Falls
Cuba
Presenter: Alliance Club

Before Night Falls shows the aftermath of war when freedoms are lost. The film tells the story of the renowned Cuban writer/novelist/poet Reinaldo Arenas, whose lost freedoms result in one man’s battle against the autocratic regime of Fidel Castro. The film is set in Cuba where under Castro’s rule there is brutal intolerance for any misfits. Arenas is a misfit, and because of his openly gay behavior and writings is imprisoned. When asked why he writes, he responds “for revenge.” After two years in prison, Arenas escapes to the U.S. and continues his writing. The film stars Javiar Bardem, Sean Penn and Johnny Depp. Rated R.

Click here for the full list of films being shown at this year’s SFCC International Film Festival. Films are shown at 7:15 PM on six consecutive Tuesday evenings at The Garland Theater. General admission fee of $5.00. Ticket sales help fund next year’s festival.

In honor of Harvey Milk Day, OutSpokane and The Magic Lantern Theatre will be showing the film Pride on May 18th (Harvey Milk’s 85th Birthday) at 6:30pm (Doors open at 6:00pm) at The Magic Lantern Theatre, 25 W Main Ave, Spokane. Tickets are FREE.

milkfrontPRIDE is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

Last year OutSpokane showed the film Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride.
