STA Plaza Construction Update

As community leaders, INBA would like to keep you, your organization and your stakeholders informed about the construction plans for the STA Plaza. The following is a press release from Spokane Transit Authority.

“After hearing from transit users and other downtown stakeholders about ways to improve the Plaza’s functionality, and how plaza improvements could better support a vibrant downtown, I’m happy to let you know that initial construction began earlier this month.

Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2017, the renovated STA Plaza will feature all customer service related functions in a convenient first-floor location.  Expanded retail options, restrooms, customer service and interior waiting spaces with real-time information signs will provide an efficient atmosphere for thousands of people who pass through the building each day.

The initial construction efforts that started on May 2nd will not have a significant impact on customers, building operations or the surrounding area. However, a second phase of construction scheduled to begin this summer will likely have larger impacts, and I want to make sure you are well informed and feel comfortable sharing information with others.  At your convenience, I’d like to briefly speak with you about the overall project, anticipated impacts from construction and ways for community members to stay informed. Is there a good time in mid or late June for us to speak? I’m happy to schedule an in-person visit or a phone call; whichever works for you.

As the second phase of construction gets closer, STA staff will be canvassing the area and distributing project fliers to provide information about staying informed and a point of contact for questions or concerns that arise from construction. Until then, here’s a few key points we want the public to know:

  • No disruptions to the bus schedule or loading zones are expected as a result of construction
  • The second floor businesses and services in the STA Plaza will remain open during construction
  • The elevators and stairwell in the Plaza will remain open to provide access to the skywalk system
  • To sign up for email construction updates and learn more about the project, please visit

We care about our customers and downtown businesses, and we want to be good neighbors.  If you hear our construction activity is causing concerns of any kind, please email or call me so we can learn more about it.

Thanks for your help in sharing this project information with those that you see fit, and we look forward to speaking with you later in June.”
